For over 80 years, Danish toy company LEGO® has been entrancing the hearts and minds of kids and adults all over the world. The colourful interlocking plastic bricks are a staple in every household, especially with children and even though it’s been decades since its launch the popularity of LEGO® bricks has not died down. In fact, in the past few years LEGO® has taken over a large stake of the pop culture domain by procuring licenses to many popular themes and franchises – from movie sagas to comic book characters LEGO® has taken the subsidiary merchandise market by storm.

We’ve round up our top 10 favourite LEGO® themes from over the years. Let us know what you think!

10. Ninjago

Running successfully since 2011, the Ninjago series of LEGO® sets revolve around six teenage ninja – Kai, Cole, Jay, Zane, Lloyd and Nya who also have their own TV series. A LEGO® Ninjago set won the title “Activity Toy of the Year” in 2012 at the American International Toy Fair in New York City. Minifigures from the LEGO® set include the six ninja, Skeleton Dummy, Sensei Wu and more. We love the interactivity of the LEGO® Ninjago sets, with almost all blister packs consisting of cards, spinners, Minifigures and weapons.

9. Pirates

A childhood fantasy is incomplete without pirates! Whether you wanted to explore the high seas or rescue a damsel in distress, LEGO® pirate sets have been a popular choice since the 1980s. The theme is still going strong decades since the launch due to plenty of reprisal opportunities over the years, from the famous ‘Red Beard’ character of the 1980s-90s to 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean LEGO® set that was based on the popular movie trilogy. Prominent LEGO® pirate minifigures characters include Captain Redbeard, Governor Broadside and Jack Sparrow.

A pop culture list is never complete without the mention of superheroes! The sometimes friendly rivalry between Marvel and DC dates back to the Golden Age of comic books, however for this point on our list we’ll stick with Marvel. LEGO® has been creating Marvel superhero sets since the 2000s with timed releases alongside movie and comic-book waves of Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man and more. In line with the adventure action-packed theme of the superheroes, LEGO® superhero sets incorporate new technology and interactive features like interchangeable weaponry and vehicles and large-scale environments.

4. LEGO® City

Probably the most diverse and most loved LEGO® theme on this list, the LEGO® City sets allow you to construct anything from a real life city – and is most likely to be everyone’s first LEGO® set. This includes airports, police helicopters, construction equipment, harbour elements and much more. The great thing about LEGO® City is it versatility. The everyday aspect of LEGO® city lets you completely escape into the fantasy whatever your age and wherever you are.

3. Jurassic World

A must for all dinosaur fans – The LEGO® Jurassic World series is one of the most recent entrants to the LEGO® theme scene. Even though LEGO® dinosaurs have been around for much longer, the launch of the Jurassic World series has really changed the game. The LEGO® has been fashioned after the 2015 Chris Pratt movie of the same name and sets include famous scenes from the film and its characters – including the Dilophosaurus Ambush, T-Rex Breakout and our favourite, Raptor Rampage.

2. Batman

We’ve kept Batman separate from our Superheroes entry on this list as it deserves all the praise it can get. First introduced in 2006, LEGO® Batman still remains a popular choice amongst the young and the old. The highlight of this theme has to be the wide range of vehicles LEGO® has created for the Gotham city protector. Batboat, Batmobile, Batcopter, Batwing, Bat-Tank and Batcycle are just some of his options available from LEGO®. Variations of the Batman minifigures exist alongside Robin, The Joker, Catwoman Poison Ivy and more.
